Lyra: A Dark Fairy Tale is a musical adaptation of the original Little Mermaid story, set against the backdrop of a Faustian dustbowl era circus. Book and lyrics by Ashley Griffin, and music by Evan Jay Newman. (Music to "Happy Ending" by Ashley Griffin.) Lyra was accepted to the Emerging Artists Theater Company's New Work Festival, and has performed at 54 Below (featuring Aspen Vincent and Shereen Hickman) and The Triad in NYC
A cross between traditional musical theater, and a European circus aesthetic, Lyra uses circus arts, not as spectacle, but, along with music, and dance as a means by which to advance the story. A beautiful, innocent young girl, a tragic clown, and an omnipotent magician set the stage for a tale of love, sacrifice, dreams, and escape.
